Running Start

Written by: Lachlan Boyd

With just as many experts as participants it is no surprise that the conversation surrounding the sport of running is often charged with passion. The beauty of the running community is that it does not matter if you are attempting your 50th ultra marathon or entering your first 2k, universally in my experience runners support each others goals and achievements.

So how does one get started running and what style should you follow?

As a Coach I can honestly say that no one size fits all when it comes to running and style is as individual as finger prints, so you should follow your own style. There are guidelines that when followed are pretty universal in achieving running success. The nitty gritty will become important down the track but to get started here are the key things to consider.

Feel Strong first

Going from 0 to 100 straight away will hurt.

To be a successful runner requires a base level of over all strength, especially if you are returning from injury or pregnancy.

Seek the help of a well recommended strength coach/personal trainer. New mums are recommended to consult their physiotherapist to get the green light for pelvic floor health.

Start Small

No matter what, start small.  Don't beat yourself up about it, remember 50m is still progress.

Listen to your feet

Running feels great.  It is smooth and rhythmic.  Will it challenge you physically? - YES, but not to breaking point.  If you feel like you are breaking, have twinges, sore hips and a sore back listen to your body - it is communicating to you that something needs to give.   Slow down and listen.

Following these simple tips can keep you on track in the early days of running.

Feel strong, start small and listen to your body and your progress will gradually increase.
