Tai Chi means so much more than slow movement by groups of people in the park.
The term T’ai chi ch’uan, shortened for our purposes to Tai Chi refers to the concept of the ‘supreme ultimate’ where yin and yang energies merge into a single ultimate source and force. The practice of tai chi is ancient, believed to have first begun in the 12th century, despite only really being recognised as a practiced art form since the 1800s. There are many forms of tai chi - both theory and practice of this martial art have evolved alongside the philosophies of Taoism and Confucianism.
Whilst much of the heritage and ritual of tai chi is lost in the modern fitness environment there are elements of this ancient practice which deliver every time for health.
Learning Tai Chi is a slow and methodical practice. In stark contrast to traditional fitness training methods Tai Chi uses controlled co-ordination and relaxation to harness energy flow in the body. The health benefits here run deep, resulting in an overall improvement in the body’s internal circulation including breathing, blood circulation, lymphatics and digestion.
From a physical training perspective a beginner in Tai Chi practice can anticipate feeling stronger and more balanced throughout their body. Increased body awareness facilitates improvements in proprioception and the nature of the tai chi movement practice encourages flowing weight transfer between the two sides of the body, removing the tendency towards single sided strength bias that can occur in traditional gym and fitness training. Individuals become stronger in all types of movement and activities of daily life from their practice of Tai Chi. The mental focus of Tai Chi practice facilitates stress relief and mental clarity - essential for health in our busy world.
The three key elements of Tai Chi practice are
- Health
- Meditation
- Martial Arts
