Tai Chi for Health & Falls Injury Prevention

TAI CHI FOR HEALTH & FALLS INJURY PREVENTION

I have been practicing Tai Chi for Health & Falls Injury Prevention for 12 months.

Initially I completed my training with Exercise Medicine Australia and was overwhelmed by the complexity of the movement and what I thought would be required to learn and teach this program to others.

My journey of learning continues.   My daily practice has allowed me to distill down a few facts that may help you decide if Tai Chi is something you would like to try too!

You can’t learn Tai Chi in a day.

There is no verifiable history of the exact origins of the martial art prior to the 17th century, however it is believed by many to have begun in Chen Village in China as early as 1374.

Various iterations and interpretations of the practice have resulted in there being 5 distinct styles of Tai Chi now - Chen, Yang, Sun, Wu and Woo.  Styles vary from calm and meditative to strong and defence based.

Tai Chi is characterised in all forms by the control and precision in movement and the mindful balance of yin and yang energies in the body.

This cannot be learnt in a day.

You can experience the benefits of moving with Tai Chi style movements, instantly.

The practice of Tai Chi teaches you to be ‘in the moment’.

Each moment happens only once.  You can experience it now as it happens, or you can lose it by thinking about what is to come, or dreaming about what has already passed.

Until you experience this, the practice of Tai Chi may look slow and boring.

Everything in life encourages us to move more swiftly.  Tai Chi asks you to slow down, both physically and mentally to train the body’s tissues to greatest effect for strength and power, and to develop a mindfulness that allows concentration and focus.  These strengths can transfer across all areas of life.  It is incredible to experience the power and strength of such slow and mindful motion.

Slow down to move and instantly you will feel Tai Chi.

Daily practice can change your life.

A little each day and your brain and body gradually adapt and can handle more.

The human body craves movement and the human brain is designed to move the body, so Tai Chi delivers for both.

I look forward to my daily practice, which I do each morning when I wake.  If I am lucky I can watch the sunrise as my body and mind embrace the day with the gentle flow of energy.

The benefits of the discipline of daily practice will transfer to other areas of your life allowing you to exert more control in the areas of life that challenge you -  for many this is work life balance and health.
