What is Mumbalates?
Mumbalates is a program that delivers fun and functional movement and play experience for new mums with bubs from 6 weeks to 6 months old. Mumbalates takes advantage of the fact that during the first few months your baby isn't going to move around too much, so this is the perfect time for you to put the focus on your own movement to build the strength that needed to chase the little one around once they are up and rolling.
Mumbalates' core values are health, confidence, resilience, understanding and mastery.
Mumbalates uses fun and functional movement to promote these values.
Our vision is a community of healthy happy mums in Cairns; and our mission is to provide safe, fun and effective exercise options for all new mums and to build a supportive local community around that.
Where appropriate Mumbalates will provide appropriate referral for specific post natal health issues outside the scope of fitness, but that affect movement.
What happens at a Mumbalates class?
Every Mumbalates class includes stretching, mobilisation, strength training, core training, balance, games and tai chi movement.
Stretching - ‘Load to explode’ stretching sequences are designed to put power into the connective tissues throughout the body and simply feel good. Mumbalates stretches will connect the body from head to foot, allowing the whole body to share the physical load of life with a new baby, rather than have it focused in shoulders and lower back.
Mobilisation - joins the dots. Mobilisation emphasises smooth, rhythmic movement at the joints - ankles, knees, hips and shoulders. Finding rhythm in movement is the key to having it feel good. The health benefits include improved circulation and reduced pain, especially in knees and lower back.
Strength - simple body weight exercises that build strength in the big muscles of the legs, back and arms. In Mumbalates all strength work is done in 3 planes of motion to create the best opportunity for success and to feel amazing.
Core - draws on the first three principles of traditional Pilates - breathing, concentration and connection and adapts movements to an upright position so that the core is reactive and strong, whatever direction the movement takes you. This is a plank free, crunch free zone
Games - de-stress time! By playing easy to learn movement based games, mums have an opportunity to relax their brains and simply enjoy movement and laughter with other mums. All games are working core, full body strength and joint mobilisation without having to think about it.
Balance - exercises utilise tai chi and yoga movement to provide an opportunity to explore and feel core strength and balance
Tai Chi - movements drawn from programs designed by Exercise Medicine Australia provide full mind and body relaxation whilst gently strengthening connective tissues and core with slow rhythmic motion.
Mumbalates is the perfect place for you to begin your post natal fitness program. It's about feeling good and having fun in an environment that is non-competitive and supportive of all new mums.
