“It cannot be considered success unless you are smiling”
Joe Desena
I want to finish my next Spartan race with an even bigger smile on my face.
Today I committed to the 30 day Spartan Fit training program detailed in Joe Desena’s book - Spartan Fit.
Day Zero is pretty straight forward. Its purpose is to benchmark the starting point. A simple warm up followed by a dead hang for time; burpees for time … a long time … and a short run.
It is done and I feel fine.
As a veteran of 9 Spartan races over all distances, and including stadium challenges, I am curious to find out how much benefit the style of training recommended in the plan will bring to my next race.
I have yet to commit to my next race. I’m looking for a new challenge. On Saturday morning as athletes strode into the festival area of the Brisbane Spartan Sprint / Beast / Ultra Beast Race I was intrigued by those carrying large boxes of supplies.
They were heading out early in the morning for the 42km Ultra Beast, which would comprise a total of 90 obstacles by its conclusion and the reward for those that finish - a small medal and a large belt buckle for their efforts.
I watched many of those same people hobbling out of the festival area at the end of the day, proudly wearing their medals and walking slowly so as not to further aggravate the muscles that had worked so hard to get them through the day.
Despite their obvious fatigue, one thing was common … the smiles on their faces. Beaming from the inside out with a sense of completion and accomplishment for the efforts of their day.
I wonder how that feels.
Can I rise to the challenge to complete such an epic race and finish with a smile.
First things first, tomorrow is day 1 of the Spartan Fit 30 day training plan.
Stay tuned and lets see what happens ...
